MATS natural food processing and packaging is a solution to one of the most pressing challenges facing the industry today: meeting the growing consumer demand for high quality, natural and additive-free packaged foods. MATS will enable food companies to transform the ‘center of the store’ by cleaning up the labels of existing brands and launching new natural food products.

The MATS technology was developed by leading food engineering scientist Juming Tang, Ph.D., at Washington State University, in conjunction with a consortium of private food packaging and equipment companies and the U.S. Department of Defense. By ensuring uniform and reproducible heat treatment within the MATS system, Dr. Tang was able to overcome a technical challenge that has long prevented the food industry from exploiting the rapid heating capabilities of microwaves. The MATS technology is the first microwave sterilization technique approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

When you shorten cooking time [with MATS], you retain more nutritional value. You produce a product that is more appealing to the consumer.
— Juming Tang, Ph.D., MATS inventor and Distinguished Chair of Food Engineering, Washington State University
